Non-Toxic Eating Swaps I’ve Made for My Toddlers: Healthier Choices for Safer Mealtimes

As a parent, nothing matters more than our children’s health—and that starts with what goes into their little bodies. Over the past year, I’ve taken a deep dive into the world of non-toxic living, especially when it comes to what my toddlers eat from, eat with, and eat. From safer food storage to cleaner utensils and healthier food options, I’ve slowly swapped out common items for non-toxic alternatives that give me peace of mind and support my kids’ well-being.

In this post, I’m sharing the non-toxic eating swaps I’ve made for my toddlers—simple changes that can make a big difference in reducing their exposure to harmful chemicals. Whether you’re just starting your low-tox journey or looking for practical ideas to clean up your kitchen routine, I hope these tips help you feel more confident about what’s on (and around) your child’s plate.

Material Guide: Safer, Smarter Dishware Choices

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is pretty much indestructible — it won’t shatter, and it won’t leach any nasty chemicals into food. It’s ideal for lunchboxes, snacks on the go, and anything you need to toss into a bag without worrying.
That said, it can’t go in the microwave, and it can dent if dropped hard enough. Still, it’s one of the most durable, low-maintenance choices out there.

Porcelain

Porcelain is a beautiful, durable, non-porous ceramic that’s been a kitchen staple for ages. It can go in the microwave and is lovely for everyday use — just remember, it can break. I love brands like Elk & Friends that add silicone sleeves for a bit of extra protection (and cuteness).

Bamboo

Bamboo dinnerware can be a lovely eco-friendly option — it’s lightweight, renewable, and has that simple, natural look that works so well on a kids’ table. But it’s worth reading the fine print: a lot of bamboo dishware is mixed with melamine binders to hold its shape, which isn’t ideal for everyday use (especially with hot foods).

If you’re going for bamboo, try to find pure bamboo products without added melamine or other synthetic resins.

Silicone

Food-grade silicone is a step up from plastic — it’s unbreakable, heat-resistant (usually up to 350 °F), microwave, dishwasher, and freezer safe.
I’m happy to use silicone on the outside of containers (like lids or cutlery sleeves), but I’m a bit more cautious with dishes where food touches the silicone daily. It also starts to smell if you put it in the dishwasher frequently!

Elk and Friends 10oz Stainless Steel Kids + Toddler Drinking Cups

I love these Elk and Friends stainless steel cups because they check all the boxes for safe, sustainable, and toddler-friendly drinkware. Made from premium food-grade stainless steel, these 10oz cups are a fantastic non-toxic alternative to plastic sippy cups and juice bottles. They come with soft silicone sleeves (for better grip and drop protection) and leak-resistant lids with straws—perfect for little hands learning to drink independently. I use these cups for my twins drinks at home, they are dishwasher safe. These have a free flow straw which means they are not spill proof but a free flow straw is better for toddler speech development.

What sets Elk and Friends apart is their thoughtful design: every part of the cup is free from BPA, phthalates, and other harmful chemicals. Plus, they’re dishwasher-safe, making cleanup a breeze for busy parents.

B.Box Insulated Drink & Water Bottle Stainless Steel with Triple Layer Insulation

Designed with little ones in mind, this bottle features triple-layer stainless steel insulation, making it both highly durable and safe from harmful chemicals like BPA and phthalates. It’s a great non-toxic alternative to plastic bottles, especially for on-the-go families. I use this bottle for when we are on the go and for preschool as it doesn’t spill when the lid is closed.

We especially love the easy push-button lid and flip-up straw, which encourage independence and make sipping spill-free and fun. The bottle’s sleek, ergonomic design fits perfectly in toddler hands and most cup holders or backpack side pockets. Whether it’s packed with water for school, smoothies for the park, or warm drinks in colder months, the b.box bottle keeps your child hydrated and healthy in style.

Mealtimes with toddlers are… let’s just say, unpredictable. That’s why I was so happy to find the Tiny Dining Bamboo Plate Set — it’s simple, cute, and actually helps keep the chaos under control. I have used these from 6 months old and I am still using them now at 2 years old! The only downside is that they are not dishwasher friendly.

The plate is made from bamboo, with divided sections (a must for picky eaters), and it comes with a soft silicone-tipped spoon. But the real MVP? The suction base. Once it’s stuck down, it stays put — no more flying plates or spaghetti on the walls.

Cleanup is easy, the materials feel safe and sturdy, and it looks way nicer than the usual plastic stuff. If you’re doing baby-led weaning or just over the dinner drama, this set is a small but mighty upgrade.

Elk and Friends Kids Stainless Steel Divided Plates with Silicone Sleeves + Lid

If you are looking for something dishwasher friendly than these are a great option!

Designed for toddlers, each plate features a strong silicone suction base to stay in place, three food compartments, and a durable 304 stainless steel body that’s non-toxic, stain-resistant, and dishwasher safe.

The removable silicone sleeve adds extra grip and protection, while the included BPA-free lids make storing leftovers a breeze. Safe, sustainable, and perfect for growing kids — these plates are a smart upgrade for any parent

stainless steel toddler cutlery

PandaEar 6 Pack Toddler Cutlery Set| Baby Fork and Spoon Set

We’ve been using the PandaEar 6-Pack Toddler Fork & Spoon Set, and it’s been a quiet lifesaver. The stainless steel heads feel grown-up, but the chunky handles are perfect for tiny hands learning to feed themselves.

It’s a full set, so we’re never scrambling for clean utensils, and everything holds up great in the dishwasher. Simple, sturdy, and toddler-approved — exactly what you want for everyday mealtimes.

B.Box Insulated Food Jar | Easy Open Container for Toddlers

Another favourite from B.Box! This is great for taking lunch out for my twins on the go! I always find the kids food options when we are out limited and unhealthy especially for my twin that is dairy free. This has been a lifesaver to bring them pasta out with us that stays hot. I need to buy another one as they are growing and want one each now!

stainless steel toddler snack pots

Elk and Friends Stainless Steel Snack Cups – Pack of 2

These are great for toddler snacks on the go! With easy grip handles and a lid to prevent mess.

Elk and Friends Kids 7.8” Porcelain White Plates with Silicone Sleeves

This plate is just lovely — durable porcelain at its finest, wrapped in a soft silicone sleeve to give it extra grip and protection (goodbye chips and cracks!). It’s microwave- and dishwasher-safe, so it works for daily use without extra fuss. The silicone also gives a bit of cushioning, making it toddler-proof-friendly.

I love the clean white design—it’s neutral but elegant— you can also buy them with a lid which is perfect for transporting meals or keeping things fresh (great for picnics, daycare or just topping up leftovers). Overall, it feels like a smart mix of style and practicality, one of those pieces you don’t mind leaving out (it looks good on your shelf too).
